History of Chess

The chess game is one of the oldest strategy games in the world and now become the most popular strategy game in the world. India is said to be the origin country where the Chess game was born, but a minority Historian believe the game comes from China or Persia.  In 1200s, chess game started spread to Europe.

The earliest known form of chess is two-handed Chaturanga, it means “the four branches of the army” who represent the real Indian army at 5th or 6th  century AD. The pieces were called elephants, chariots, horses, and foot soldiers. Some theory said that Chaturanga played using dice to decide which piece to move. From India the game spread to Persia, and it was called ‘chatrang’. Chatrang become popular in Arab when Arab invaded Persia in 7th century, but in Arab it’s called ‘shatranj’. 

And finnaly arrived in Europe after Arab expansion. In Europe the chess game was evolved. Europeans gave the name of the pieces of chess by the name we know by today. In Europe the sides of the game called Red and Black because those colors was the commonly ink that available for handwriting drawing a chess game layout. The game earlier played by the upper class, before the merchant classes make the game available for everyone.

Then the chess game improve and be more popular in entire world. the first World tournament was held in 1886, And the title of chess grandmaster was first formally conferred by Tsar Nicholas II of Russia to Lasker, Capablanca, Alekhine, Tarrasch and Marshall, but this is a disputed claim according to sources state in 1914.  in 1924 in Paris World Chess Federation (FIDE) founded, and  In 1927 Women’s World Chess Championship was establish. Since then FIDE maintains a numerical rating system for chess master players, awards titles, organizes the world championship, and runs a biennial chess championship that brings together teams from many of countries.
